Specific data collection for the update of baseline information and/or cartography

Preparatory Actions

Although LIFE Phoenix is based on information collected over the last decades, which was reviewed for the elaboration of the proposal, it is necessary to update some aspects in order to have a more accurate reference situation for the specific areas of intervention. In particular, the following work will be carried out:

  • Study on soil conservation and hydrology in the target palm groves of Gran Canaria.
  • Study on the current degree of hybridisation of the 4 selected palm groves in Gran Canaria and prospective evaluation in the 6 palm groves of Crete.
  • Study on the current degree of infection by Diocalandra frumenti in the 2 selected SACs and in the main propagation focuses in Gran Canaria, as well as a prospective assessment of the infection by Rhynchophorus ferrugineus in the 6 palm groves of Crete.
  • Updated assessment of the coverage and distribution of plant IAS and other competing plants in the action areas of Gran Canaria and Crete.
  • Updated assessment of current anthropogenic impacts (overgrazing and visitor pressure) in the target sites of Crete.
  • Baseline study on the diversity and abundance of pollinators (Apoidea, Syrphidae, Lepidoptera or any other relevant taxonomic group) in the project areas. It represents the baseline from which to quantify the impact of the project in terms of biodiversity.
