Initial stakeholder meetings for the LIFE Phoenix project in Crete

06/03/2025

Stakeholder and social partner meetings were held in Spili, Municipality of Agios Vasileios (Rethymno) and Pyrgos (Asterousia) on February 11 and 12, 2025, respectively, in the framework of the LIFE Phoenix project.

These meetings aimed to introduce stakeholders to the project and its objectives, highlight the importance of protecting Crete’s Palm Forests, address the threats they face, and present proposed restoration and conservation measures outlined in the Palm Grove Management Plan.

Emphasis was placed on the active involvement of local authorities, organizations, and citizens in the protection of this emblematic habitat through participatory processes. Discussions included ways in which local stakeholders can contribute to the project, particularly by joining the Working Group and adhering to the project's Code of Conduct. The Working Group will convene annually to receive updates, provide guidance, and support the implementation of project actions for Palm Forest conservation.

In addition, opportunities for collaboration and networking with local stakeholders were explored. Participants were encouraged to engage in the Volunteer Network to assist with dissemination and educational activities and contribute to the early detection mechanism of pests.

The meetings were attended by representatives from Local Authorities, Municipalities, the Center of Education for the Environment and Sustainability (CEES) of Agios Vasileios, the Heraklion Development Agency and the Asterousia Local Committee (MaB Unesco).

We would like to thank the Municipality of Agios Vasileios for providing the Municipal Council Hall in Spili and the Municipality of Archanes-Asterousia for offering the Municipal Hall in Pyrgos for the events.

Further introductory meetings are planned in other areas of the island in the near future.
