03/04/2025

On Wednesday 2nd April, a joint technical visit was made by several project partners (Environment Service of the Council of Gran Canaria, D.G. Agriculture of the Government of the Canary Islands, ICIA and GESPLAN) and the public company GMR Canarias to the project action areas included in Fataga SAC.

The main objectives of this visit were several:

a) Field work progress assessment in Arteara and Aserraderos palm groves, as well as planning of future plantations.

b) Technical training given by GMR to GESPLAN operators linked to the project on the preparation and placement of traps for the control of Diocalandra frumenti.

c) Visit to two private estates with palm groves inside them, which form the northern boundary of the action area in Fataga, and setting of traps in the facilities of the Camel Safari Park La Baranda, an establishment with which a collaboration agreement is being studied.

During the day, all the members were able to see the notable progress made in field work to clean up the area, which included the removal of pruning and rubbish, chipping of palm leaves and clearing the reeds within the ravine bed. The images show the initial and subsequent situation in one of the sections.

The collaboration initiated with the private estates visited made it possible to install a first series of traps in their palm groves, which will act as a barrier to contain the pest of D. frumenti in the northern limit of the acttion area in Fataga.
