Actions

Elaboration or updating of management plans/protocols as guidelines for concrete conservation actions.

T.2.3
Preparatory Actions

The new information generated in task T.2.2, together with all previous existing information, will be analysed in order to elaborate specific plans and protocols that will guide the restoration and conservation actions included in WP3. All partners are involved in their elaboration, contributing with their expertise in the different disciplines involved. In particular, the following products are considered:

  • Palm Grove Management Plan in Gran Canaria: this will describe the diversity and scope of actions at each location in relation to an integrated restoration and conservation strategy, including the necessary resources and a detailed timetable for field work. The plan will address climate change mitigation, habitat restoration, reduction of hybridisation, control/eradication of IAS and competing species, as well as reforestation. It will include detailed cartography showing the deployment of actions.
  • Palm Grove Management Plan in Crete: the document will include the same aspects as those discussed for Gran Canaria, as well as specific grazing and visitor management measures. Climate change mitigation will focus on forest fire prevention (extinguishing infrastructure, removal of dead wood and IAS). Hybridisation control in Crete will be limited to prospective assessments (not confirmed for P. theophrasti) and exchange of protocols on early detection and control.
  • Protocol for genetic analyses of Phoenix: existing methods will be updated and adapted in terms of genetic and molecular techniques for hybridisation assessment. This document will be the main material for knowledge exchange and replication of hybridisation actions between the two project regions.
  • Protocol for genetic quality palm production: this document will be based on the extensive previous experience developed by the Canarian Botanical Garden, the CGC, the ULPGC and the UoC, including all the stages involved (seed sources, germplasm conservation, specific requirements in the nursery, production and conservation of seedlings, etc.).
  • Protocol for the management of competing species and target IAS: it will describe the scope of actions in each region addressing the three phases of intervention (prevention, early detection and control/eradication). Specific techniques will be prioritised according to locations and based on previous experience of project partners. The document will include specific actions for the control and eradication of D. frumenti in Gran Canaria and preventive measures for R. ferrugineus in Crete (in the latter case based on previous control experiences in the Canary Islands).
  • Manual on Best Practices for palm grove conservation: the document will include a set of agro-environmental measures, forest management techniques (palm trimming, phytosanitary techniques) and/or nursery/gardening practices specifically designed for palm groves and adapted to the specific contexts of both regions. It will be one of the materials used in other training and dissemination actions with involved social actors.

Action status

It reflects the percentage of work done since the beginning of the action.
