LIFE Phoenix Volunteer Team: Taking Action to Protect Crete’s Palm Forests

01/07/2025

The first online meeting of the LIFE Phoenix project’s Volunteer Team was successfully held on Monday, June 16, 2025, bringing together citizens, scientists, and volunteers with a shared goal: the protection of Crete’s unique palm forests. The event was organized by the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature and the Natural History Museum of Crete – University of Crete, within the framework of the project LIFE Phoenix (code 101113584 – LIFE22-NAT-ES-LIFE Phoenix).

During the meeting, the project's goals and conservation actions were presented. Τhe crucial role of local communities in preserving Crete’s palm forests was highlighted, as well as the importance of volunteers in monitoring and protecting them. Special emphasis was placed on the Priority Habitat “Palm Groves of Phoenix” and the species Phoenix theophrasti, which is endemic to the southeastern Mediterranean.

Dr. Dimitrios Avtzis, entomologist and research director at the Institute of Forest Research of ELGO-DIMITRA, analyzed the threat posed by the red palm weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus) to Phoenix theophrasti populations. He described the symptoms of infestation and the methods for early detection. He highlighted the importance of prevention and cooperation between institutions and citizens to effectively combat the insect’s spread.

The Volunteer Team is now taking action in the field, strengthening the collective effort to protect Crete’s valuable palm forests. The project’s dynamic launch demonstrates how collaboration among the scientific community, citizens, and institutions can establish the foundation for effective and long-term environmental management.
