Volunteer Cleanup at Aspri Limni beach in Crete for the Protection of the Cretan Date Palm (Phoenix theophrasti)

26/06/2026

A successful volunteer beach cleanup took place on Sunday, 24 May 2026, at Aspri Limni (White Lake) beach, in the Chrysoskalitissa area at the southwestern tip of Crete, as part of the European LIFE Phoenix project (LIFE22-NAT-ES-LIFE Phoenix – 101113584) and on the occasion of the International Day for Biological Diversity (22 May). The activity was co-organized by the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature (HSPN), the Municipality of Kissamos, and the Chania Forest Directorate.

Aspri Limni is one of the most important sites for the endemic Cretan Date Palm (Phoenix theophrasti), as it marks the westernmost distribution of the species on the island of Crete. In recent years, the palm grove has faced significant pressures from human activities, limiting its natural regeneration. To support habitat restoration and conservation, the Chania Forest Directorate has carried out plantings of young palm trees within a protected fenced area. At the same time, ongoing maintenance measures are being implemented to ensure the survival and long-term viability of the planted individuals.

During the cleanup, volunteers collected more than 15 bags of litter, along with bulky waste items that had been abandoned in the area. Cleanup materials, including bags and gloves, were kindly provided by the Municipality of Kissamos.

Volunteers of all ages took part in the activity, contributing directly to the protection of the site while also learning about the unique ecological value of the palm grove and the threats it faces.

Following the cleanup, representatives of the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature and the Forest Service held an informative discussion with participants. A guided walk through the palm grove highlighted key issues related to ecosystem conservation and the relationship between the local community and the natural environment of the area.

The event demonstrated the importance of citizen participation in nature conservation and provided an opportunity for meaningful dialogue on the need to preserve and promote the ecological value of Aspri Limni.

We warmly thank all volunteers and organizations who responded to the call and contributed to the success of this initiative.
