kickOff LIFE Phoenix

10/10/2023

This new project, an initiative of the Council of Gran Canaria and coordinated by GESPLAN, was presented on Tuesday 10 October during the kick-off meetings organised by the European Commission's LIFE Programme managers. Gustavo Viera, Technical Director of the project, presented the main characteristics of the project, in a session in which the rest of the proposals selected in the Nature section during the 2022 call were also presented.

The LIFE Phoenix project brings together different public and private entities, scientific institutions and non-governmental organisations from Spain and Greece. Its main objective is to advance knowledge, methodologies and procedures aimed at improving the conservation status of Europe´s endemic palm groves, formed by the Canarian palm tree in the Canary Islands and the Cretan palm tree in Greece.

These plant formations are included among the priority habitats to be conserved by the European Union, under the habitat designation 9370* "Palm groves of Phoenix".
